In 1820 the Erie Canal intersected the village crossroads here, and barges unloaded near the old Salina Street Bridge.  On January 1, 1870, 20,00 people gathered in the square for a barbeque sponsored by local brewer and tavern owner John Greenway.  Intended to feed the “needy poor,” the feast attracted many “well-to-do folks from the city and the towns.”  Clinton Square was renovated several years ago and is now the site for many different festivals held downtown throughout the year.  In the winter months, an outdoor ice skating rink is available to the public.
