Columbus Monument and Fountain, erected in 1934, the unveiling of the monument centered on Columbus Circle, drew a crowd of 40,000 people.  The 11' bronze statue atop the monument was sculpted in Florence, Italy by Lorenzo Baldi.  The surrounding fountain is by Dwight James Baur, who supervised the entire project.  It faces west since this is the direction in which Columbus sailed to America.  A popular outdoor meeting and luncheon spot, and the centerpiece of the annual Syracuse Arts & Crafts Festival, the circle is surrounded by several of Syracuse's architectural jewels.
