McArthur, Wirth & Cooney Building

Address

221 Walton St.
Syracuse, NY 13202 (map)

Area

Armory Square
Fire-damamged, slated for demolition, and called an eyesore not too long ago, this building now brightens the westernmost border of the Armory Square Historical District near the Onondaga Creek.  Onondaga Dynamo Works built and first occupied this three-story warehouse structure in 1899.  McArthur, Wirth & Cooney, a supplier of tools and machinery, had owned the building for most of the 20th century.  Like its immediate neighbors, the building is of heavy post-and-beam construction, but its curtain wall type facade and a prominent skylight in the center give it distinction.
