Wesleyan Methodist Church, the oldest religious
building remaining in the city, was built in the simple style of a
Greek Revival meetinghouse. The congregation was formed in 1843 by a
group of Methodists who separated from the parent church because it
would not take a stand against slavery. The church is suspected of
having been a stop on the Underground Railroad, and while this might be
disputed, many abolitionists did have a hand in organizing the
congregation. There were alterations in 1877 and in 1910. The brick
was painted and stained glass was put in the windows. The tower was
added later. The church is now home to the Mission, a pan-american
restaurant.
