Enriching the quality of life in downtown Syracuse is a high
concentration of arts and cultural facilities. Relative to other
cities of its size, Syracuse is among the smallest communities in the
nation that support a full symphony orchestra and opera. In addition,
downtown is home to several museums, theaters, galleries, and visual
and performing arts organizations.
Recognizing the value of
the arts in encouaging downtown tourism and fostering economic growth,
Mayor Matthew Driscoll and the Syracuse Common Council recently
designated downtown as a “Cultural District.“ A
Cultural Commission appointed by the Mayor and the County Executive,
will administer programs to cultivate collaboration among cultural
groups, market the cultural attractions downtown as a single entity and
raise funds to support the arts.
