175+ Volunteers Expected for Earth Day Clean Up around Downtown Syracuse and University Hill Neighborhoods

Saturday, April 25, 2015

volunteer earth daySyracuse, NY - More than 175 volunteers have signed up to help give Downtown Syracuse and University Hill a spring cleaning. Keeping with Earth Day tradition, the Downtown Committee is partnering with the City of Syracuse’s Clean Up Cuse effort to make sure the gateways to the center of the city are ready for new life to welcome spring.

Throughout the morning of Saturday, April 25, volunteers will meet Downtown Committee staff at five different locations spread across Downtown Syracuse and University Hill. All volunteers will be provided with gloves, trash bags and a free green t-shirt. Everyone is welcome to participate, even if they didn’t pre-register. Last year, a record 200 volunteers filled more than 400 garbage bags.

“Our Earth Day Clean Up is one of our biggest volunteer events that we hold each year. We always look forward to it,” said Merike Treier, executive director of the Downtown Committee of Syracuse. “Our crew does a great job working to beautify the core of Downtown Syracuse every day, but we love it when our volunteers, their families and kids get involved. It’s amazing what can be accomplished in just a couple of hours.”

Upon meeting at their designated locations, volunteers will also receive breakfast treats. New this year, Peppino’s will deliver free breakfast pizza to select locations. As always, volunteers who wish to stay for lunch will be treated to lunch provided by the Downtown Committee through partnerships with J. Ryan’s  Pub (at 253 East Water Street in Downtown Syracuse), and Varsity Pizza (at 802 South Crouse Avenue in Syracuse).
