On Saturday, April 28th the Downtown Committee, downtown employers and volunteers will celebrate Earth Day with a spring clean-up in downtown Syracuse. To date 56 volunteers representing six businesses and organizations have volunteered to join us for the Earth Day event.
The focus of this year’s event will be to clean downtown gateways, particularly where the highways and major arterials enter downtown. Volunteers will be working from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. to clean these areas. The Downtown Committee will be providing supplies and logistical support including trash bags and gloves. The City Department of Public works will be removing the trash once it is collected by the volunteers. The Downtown Committee will also provide breakfast for the volunteers and everyone participating will be invited to lunch at a downtown restaurant.
Ed Koolakian, chair of the Downtown Committee’s
Clean and Safe Subcommittee, noted that the downtown spring clean-up
has turned into one of the largest Earth Day events in the County. “Every year we have been able to attract volunteers from among downtown’s employers, organizations, and
residents. Some of the volunteer groups have been with us for a dozen years or more. It is gratifying that so many people care about downtown that they come out every year to do this. We greatly appreciate the support they give us.”
The following organizations have volunteered to assist in the clean-up. They will be gathering at the locations noted and times specified to begin work.

The Downtown Committee is a private, not-for-profit, professional downtown management organization, representing all property owners and tenants within the central business district. The organization was created by the City of Syracuse in 1975 at the request of the private-sector leadership. A special assessment district was created to provide the financial resources necessary to ensure the proper management of the area bound by Interstate 81, Interstate 690, Onondaga Creek and Adams Street. The Downtown Committee undertakes programs to improve downtown’s image, strengthen its economic base, increase its attractiveness, and assure that it’s clean, safe and accessible.
