Saturday, May 19, 2007

Think ‘Parade of Homes’ with a cosmopolitan flair. The first-ever Downtown Living Tour debuts on Saturday, May 19, from 12-6 p.m. , opening the doors to eight exciting residential projects in Downtown Syracuse—“Central New York’s Next Great Neighborhood!” The tour includes several of downtown’s historic renovations featuring rental units with exposed brick and rafters, as well as new construction and conversion condominium units in neighborhoods throughout downtown—Clinton Square, Hanover Square, Montgomery Street corridor, and Armory Square. Highlights include some of the newest residential projects in the city, including both occupied and vacant units, as well as some still on the drawing board!

The tour has something to interest almost anyone, including young professionals and empty nesters considering living downtown, as well as anyone who likes interior design, decorating, historic preservation and architecture, or the newest trends in city living. In addition to an insider’s look at the apartments and condominiums, tour-goers will benefit from special offers and events at downtown restaurants, retailers, and cultural institutions.

The tour is self-guided and sites can be visited in any order. The ticket allows one-time entrance to all tour stops. The stops can be visited in any order. The tour is designed as a walking tour, but special CENTRO Downtown Living Tour shuttles will be making frequent loops around downtown from noon to 6 p.m. Advance sale tickets are on sale now through May 15 for $10. Day of event tickets, if available, are $12 during the tour. All tickets can be picked up at the Hotel Syracuse. Descriptions of each property are on the website under tour stops. A guide will be published and distributed in The Post-Standard in mid-May and distributed to ticket-holders at the event.

Conceived and organized by the Onondaga Citizens League and the Downtown Committee, the tour is intended to build greater awareness of and pride in the architecture, attributes, and creative housing options in the downtown district. The tour follows up on OCL’s comprehensive report on Central New York’s city center, “Leveraging Better Outcomes for Downtown,” which stresses the importance of  new market-rate residential options as a key element in the reinvention of downtown.
