For the past year, twelve sculptures by the artist David Hayes were seen throughout downtown Syracuse, making up the largest show of contemporary sculpture ever mounted in Syracuse.
The City of Syracuse, the Cultural Resources Council, the Downtown Committee of Syracuse, the Everson Museum and the 40 Below Public Arts Task Force collaborated with the artist on this outdoor exhibition on downtown streets and parks, coupled with four additional large sculptures on the grounds of the Everson Museum. David Hayes was born in Hartford, CT and received an A.B. degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1953 and a M.F.A. degree from Indiana University in 1955 where he studied with David Smith. He has received a post-doctoral Fulbright award and a Guggenheim Fellowship. He is a recipient of the Logan Prize for Sculpture and an award from the National Institute of Arts and Letters. He has had over 300 exhibitions and is included in over 100 institutional collections including that of the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum in New York. He resides in Coventry, CT.
Totems Spring up in Downtown!
A number of Totems like the ones you see below, have been placed over old parking meter posts throughout downtown Syracuse. Started in 2006 as a project of the Downtown TNT in partnership with the Downtown Committee and Cultural Resources Council, the Totem Project originally funded 10 pieces of art from regional artists. The project has been expanded due to a collaboration between the 40 Below Public Arts Task Force and the Gifford Foundation. The purpose of this project is to beautify public spaces in downtown through visual arts and to promote collaboration between various arts organizations, artists, and downtown stakeholders.
