Economic Development Coordinator

Job Title: Economic Development Coordinator

Position Reports to:  Director of Economic Development

Status: Non-exempt

Summary of Role:  Downtown organization seeks organized and motivated individual to support downtown revitalization initiatives. Exceptional research and writing skills, with keen attention to detail, are required for updating and maintaining downtown databases, assembling informational packages, applying for and managing placemaking grants, and assisting with a number of diverse programming needs. Business support, recruitment, and promotional activities are also involved. Candidates will possess a strong interest in urban centers and a drive to serve the community, while learning the mechanics of downtown revitalization. Successful candidate will enjoy data collection, verification, analysis, and reporting as they strive to become an expert resource in downtown Syracuse stats and information.

Key Responsibilities: 
The position will develop a working familiarity with all 300+ downtown Syracuse properties and 200+ businesses. This involves:

    • Visiting properties and businesses.
    • Communicating regularly with commercial and residential leasing agents.
    • Collecting and verifying data on available space, pricing, amenities, contact information.
    • Tracking business openings, closings, and relocations.
    • Tracking real estate development projects and investment data.
    • Entering and maintaining data in Insightly database program.
    • Coordinating transfer of housing, parking, retail, and office data to web.
    • Verifying data for brochure updates.
    • Creating accurate property packages for business recruitment efforts.
    • Assembling and formatting property packages using InDesign.
    • Running custom reports on downtown investment, housing, business types, etc.
    • Formatting, visualizing, and communicating data to both internal and external audiences.

 The position will aid members of the Downtown Committee staff relating to economic development, marketing and communications through:

    • Spearheading assembly of market data, including trends, demographics, investment and development statistics.
    • Becoming an expert in the Downtown Committee’s internal database functioning, as well as its contents. Craft new fields and reports, input data, analyze and present outputs.
    • Performing monthly update of real estate listings.
    • Developing knowledge of Downtown’s major employers, as well as employment trends (e.g. growing sectors).
    • Providing information to Marketing team for their use in creating mailing lists, guides, website updates, and newsletter and social media content.
    • Pulling and analyzing statistics for public information requests, media requests, and internal reports.
    • Managing and making monthly updates to Downtown Housing Guide and Parking brochure.
    • Coordinating updates of new information to web.
    • Working directly with the Director of Economic Development on annual vacant property survey, annual report, Board of Directors presentations, and semi-annual commercial occupancy reports.

The position will apply for and manage placemaking grants (e.g. street furnishings, public art, beautification initiatives).

The position will represent the Downtown Committee at certain community meetings and events. This includes attending monthly neighborhood meetings; preparing and presenting monthly reports on new development projects, public space improvements (planned and underway), upcoming downtown and Downtown Committee events, and a summary of business openings, closings, and relocations; listening to and gathering public feedback; and sharing ways for community members to participate. Must be comfortable interacting with downtown’s diverse population and audience.

Qualifications: 
A Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, public administration, public policy, community development, government, real estate, or a related field.  Experience using all Microsoft Office Programs and Adobe programs (InDesign) desired. Strong writing skills required, including ability to tailor messaging to communicate effectively to a range of audiences and purposes. Strong organizational skills required to fully support the initiatives and data needs of various team members. Must be able to multitask in a collaborative work setting. Position requires high attention to detail, a drive for accuracy, strong work ethic, commitment to customer service and motivation to responsibly respond to community needs and inquiries. Must be able to read, write and understand English.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit up to 75% of the time 
  • Ability to ambulate throughout all or parts of 82-block district. 
  • The ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
