Record 4,507 Votes Determines Winning Designs in Fourth Annual Downtown Syracuse Window Wonderland Contest

Syracuse, NY - A record 4,507 people cast votes for their favorite window displays in our annual holiday window-decorating contest, and the results are in!

Soup R Salads, located at 308 S. Warren Street (map), defends its first place title from 2018, taking home the top prize of $500. The popular lunch place, owned by Cheryl Hassett, garnered a total of 1,981 votes. Soup R Salads has two window displays featuring New York City traditions: One window depicts Times Square - complete with the New Year's Eve ball for the ball drop - and the other displays a Radio City Music Hall Rockettes' kickline.

Cathy's Cookie Kitchen, located at 266 W. Jefferson Street (map), earned the second-place ($250) title in the contest. The window display is a "peppermint paradise," depicting candy canes and ribbon surrounded in snow.

Element on Water, located at 206 W. Water Street (map) earned third place in the voting ranks. The salon's interactive "Naughty and Nice" display encouraged visitors to choose whether they'd been naughty or nice this year, and take a picture in front of the window with which they identified. If they shared their post on social media using the hashtag, #ElementSelves, they were entered into a drawing to win a bag of signature goodies from the salon.

The Window Wonderland Contest was designed to boost the sense of the holiday spirit, entertain visitors and attract new customers into Downtown to experience its variety of retail, restaurant and cultural offerings.

"The Window Wonderland Contest brings a fun energy to the streetscape by inviting visitorws to explore Downtown during the holiday season, and encourages a friendly competition among the variety of businesses that call Downtown home," said Merike Treier, executive director of the Downtown Committee. "The creativity of our Downtown retailers and restaurateurs is inspiring. Each display offers a glimpse into the unique character of the one-of-a-kind shops and restaurants that have put Downtown on the map as a retail and foodie destination."

The Window Wonderland Contest has grown every year since its inception in 2016, both in terms of the number of participating businesses and the number of votes generated. A total of 18 businesses participated in the first-ever Window Wonderland contest, and this year's votes are almost double the amount of votes cast in the 2018 contest (2,300).
