Jewels from the Fire: 20th Century Enamels

On view February 10-April 28, 2024

Due to the use of similar materials and processes, enamels share a close relationship with ceramics. Rather than working on clay surfaces, enamellists work on metal, creating everything from functional jewelry and dinnerware to wall-mounted panels. The pigments used in the process of enameling, known as enamels, behave similarly to ceramic glazes. Made up of mineral pigments and a glassy powder called frit, enamels can be painted as a liquid or sifted and sprinkled onto a surface while dry. The enameled metal is then placed in a kiln at temperatures ranging from 1400°F to 1650°F. After cooling, artists often add and fire additional layers of enamel, which creates seductive, jewel-like surfaces.

The Everson Museum houses a significant collection of enamels by artists like Ellamarie and Jackson Wooley, June Schwarcz, and Edward H. Winter, and several leading ceramists like Gertrud and Otto Natzler and Carleton Ball also worked in enamel. Many venues that showed ceramics also championed enamels, including the Everson’s Ceramic National exhibitions. After waning in popularity in the mid-20th century, enamels are experiencing a comeback thanks to new technologies and the proliferation of community studios and makerspaces that provide shared equipment and knowledge.

Janet Biggs: Imagination and Desire in a Northern Landscape

On view February 10, 2024-May 12, 2024

In 2009 and 2010, Janet Biggs traveled to the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard with a crew of artists and scientists to document the changing Arctic landscape. As the subject of centuries of exploration, the Arctic was once seen as indifferent to human enterprise, so vast and inhospitable as to be immune to any imposition. Today, scientists expect climate change to leave Arctic summers ice-free as early as the next decade, and Svalbard, located halfway between Europe and the North Pole, finds itself at the epicenter of this metamorphoses. Using footage compiled on her voyages north, Biggs explores this history and the alarming consequences of human enterprise in three videos: Warning Shot (2016), Brightness All Around (2011), and Fade to White (2010). Shown together, these works are a clarion call for a heroic landscape that will completely transform within our lifetimes.

Janet Biggs: Imagination and Desire in a Northern Landscape is organized by the Barry Lopez Foundation for Art & Environment. Based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the Barry Lopez Foundation works with contemporary artists to organize exhibitions addressing climate change, biodiversity, habitat loss, and our relationship with the land in a time of environmental crisis.

Off the Rack

On view through May 5, 2024

Off the Rack is the happy by-product of a major renovation of the Everson's on-site art storage. As hundreds of paintings and framed works are displaced from their racks while renovations take place, the public has an unprecedented opportunity to view objects that have been in deep storage for years, never-before-seen recent acquisitions, and some perennial favorites—all hung together salon-style in our exhibition galleries. This smorgasbord of paintings and works on paper showcases the breadth and depth of the Museum's collections and provides a glimpse into the world of collections management and care.

David Edward Johnson: No Roses in December

Based in Skaneateles, NY, David Edward Johnson creates mixed media assemblages that address belief systems, the birth and death of the American Dream, and the effects of loss at a personal level. No Roses in December features a series of works in which Johnson explores his father’s diagnosis of and descent into dementia. Johnson pairs his own photographs of bleak West Texas vistas and abandoned adobe dwellings with abstract mixed media painting, vintage papers, found objects, and other ephemera as a way to evoke fragmented shards of memory that mimic his father’s state of mind. The series title references a poem by Geoffrey Anketell Studdert-Kennedy that was popularized in a speech about courage by Peter Pan author JM Barrie: “God gave us memory so that we might have roses in December.” Without memories, we have no blooms in the chill of the December of life.

David Edward Johnson: No Roses in December is part of the Everson CNY Artist Initiative, an exhibition program that celebrates the multi-faceted talents of regional artists. The CNY Artist Initiative is made possible with support from Terry and Bill Delavan.

Sana Musasama: Returning to Ourselves

On view February 3, 2024-April 28, 2024

Throughout her career, Brooklyn-based artist Sana Musasama has drawn inspiration from travel and research into global cultures. Returning to Ourselves centers around a series of dolls that Musasama produced that mirror African-American topsy turvy dolls containing a white doll whose skirt can be flipped up to transform it into a Black doll. Musasama uses this formal structure to juxtapose different figures drawn from the global Black diaspora. Returning to Ourselves is rounded out by a series of ceramic houses Musasama began early in her career but returned to during the pandemic to combat looming depression.

"Poetry is language at its most distilled and powerful." -Rita Dove

In this first four-week installment of Salty Spring Poets Club, we will pour language into classical poetic forms. What can forms like the sonnet and haiku teach us about calibrating language with power and intentionality? How does the prose poem emerge as a tool for breaking the rules and sequencing images? Each session, we will investigate a handful of poems written by contemporary poets and write our own poems in conversation with form and immediate environment.

Using the Everson’s permanent collection and rotating exhibitions, we will write in response to visual artworks relevant to our desires and interests. Sessions will prioritize generative writing and supportive, encouraging feedback. At the end of the month, we will perform for our loved ones and peers, coming away with a portfolio of four or more carefully crafted poems.

The three-day Syracuse Polish Festival is a family-friendly celebration of Polish culture, heritage, and traditions. Festival goal is to provide a variety of entertainment, including the sounds of Polka, Pop/Jazz, Dance-Funk music along with beautiful folklore dance performances.

Our event offers attendees a taste of Polish and American cuisine and Polish beer along with Polish and American arts and crafts. One of the main attractions is the annual “Pierogi Eating Contest” and “Miss Polonia” presentation.

During the festival, kids can enjoy a variety of hands-on arts and crafts and interactive games and inflatable activities for them. Our efforts are based on providing a fantastic, fun time to those who visit by holding high standards and ensuring comfort. We keep the whole family busy.

I've Learned To Hold Myself Softly: Cali M. Banks

Comprised of 30 images and one film, Banks has created an exhibition with Syracuse as her muse.

She began documenting her hometown of Syracuse in November 2022. When she traveled back to places of importance during my "coming of age" years, she realized many places of both solace and nostalgia have been demolished or abandoned. Banks started to rework this experimental, documentary project with ideas of "teardown towns" and blind tradition. She utilizes self-portraiture, still-lives, and architecture that is specific to Syracuse, and symbolism depicting bodies, ritual, and sensuality, which in turn uses nonverbal communication as a way to emphasize tradition. This project also explores the complexities of layers of existence through materialistic remnants and the essence of non-tangibility. With a rapidly changing hometown as the core of the work, Banks is capturing attention with a familiar setting to the community.

In/Visible Breaths: Afro-poetics in Technology

An Afro-Surrealist public humanities project that uses museum-based archives—from the Syracuse University Art Museum and Special Collections Research Center at SU—within virtual- and extended-reality (VR/XR) technology to generate meditation-based visual art experiences that incite literacy development. Navigating mindfulness at the intersection of technology and literacy, this project hopes to inspire moments of stillness and reflection by embedding various breathing techniques and mantras within the VR/XR installation and the Afro-poetic stimuli itself. Participants will be able to interact with the virtual environment and create poems based on their own experiences.

Crime of the Century: Evelyn Nesbit, Harry Thaw, and the Murder of Stanford White

Evelyn Nesbit first captivated Americans with her beauty and charm, then became the sympathetic focus of the Crime of the Century in 1906, following the murder of her former paramour, famed architect Stanford White, by her unhinged millionaire husband, Harry K. Thaw. The staged reading of a new play by Syracuse playwright Garrett Heater mixes early musical theater sensationalism with the tragedy of Nesbit's abuse by men, money, and the media.
