Record 2,128 Votes Determines Winning Designs in Third Annual Downtown Syracuse Window Wonderland Contest

Wednesday, January 2, 2019

Syracuse, NY – A record 2,128 people cast their votes for their favorite window displays in the Downtown Committee of Syracuse, Inc.’s third annual holiday window-decorating contest and the results are in!

Soup R Salads First Place
  • Soup R Salads, located at 308 S. Warren Street, takes the top prize of $500. The popular lunch place, owned by Cheryl Hassett, garnered the top number of first place votes. One of the highlights of the Soup R Salads window display featured The Grinch riding in a sleigh!
Pastabilities Second Place
  • Pastabilities, located at 311 South Franklin Street, earned the second-place ($250) title in the contest. The window display, “Gnome for the Holidays,” depicts gnomes to bring joy and peace to those who may need a little extra hope this holiday season. Owner Karyn Korteling, whose daughter was in California during the tragic wildfires, said the gnomes symbolize “protectors of treasures.”
The Changing Room Third Place
  • The Changing Room, located at 425 South Warren Street, set the bar high in the contest’s inaugural year (2016), and defends its third-place title from last year (2017). This year, owner Kathie Morris’ window display featured mannequins Thelma and Louise with beautifully wrapped presents. Third place earns a cash prize of $100.

In 2018, contest votes increased by nearly 33% from 2017 votes, and eight Downtown businesses – including first-place Soup R Salads and second-place Pastabilities – were new to the contest.

“The creativity of our Downtown retailers and restaurateurs is inspiring,” said Merike Treier, executive director of the Downtown Committee. “The Window Wonderland Contest brings a fun energy to the streetscape by encouraging visitors to explore Downtown Syracuse during the holiday season, inviting people to walk around, and step inside these unique, one-of-a-kind shops that have put Downtown Syracuse on the map as a retail destination.”

The Window Wonderland contest is part of the Downtown Committee’s year-round Art in the Windows program, which showcases available storefronts as retail business opportunities by spotlighting the talents of local artists.
