Voting Opens as 24 Businesses Reveal Window Wonderland Displays & Downtown Committee Introduces New "Selfie Spot" Encouraging the Community to "Wish Upon a Downtown Star"

Wednesday, November 21, 2018

Syracuse, NY – This holiday season, the Downtown Committee of Syracuse, Inc. encourages the community to enhance their holiday experience as traditions bring them to Downtown Syracuse. On Friday, November 23, the Downtown Committee announced the return of two favorite contests, and introduced an engaging new element to help visitors interact with Downtown Syracuse.

The Downtown Committee invites the community to “Wish Upon a Downtown Star,” sharing their wishes, dreams and visions for Syracuse! A 10-foot lighted star is the newest “selfie spot” in Downtown Syracuse illuminating Perseverance Park at the corner of Salina and Fayette Streets (map).  Downtown residents, employees and visitors are encouraged to pose in front of the star, think about their wish(es) for our community, then share the image and their wish(es) across social media platforms using the hashtag, #IWish. The Downtown Star will be up through the end of December, thanks to the support of Pathfinder Bank.

Third Annual Window Wonderland Contest: The community may make the Downtown Star a stop along the Window Wonderland route, as they check out 24 businesses that have decorated their windows for the third-annual Window Wonderland Contest. Online voting is officially open in the contest. The idea is that while people and families are out and about – whether it’s for the City of Syracuse’s Tree Lighting Ceremony Friday evening, Small Business Saturday shopping on Saturday, or other favorite family traditions – they’ll incorporate the Window Wonderland displays outlined in this map into their plans. The goal of the promotion is to entertain visitors and highlight the diverse array of businesses and retail stores found within Downtown Syracuse.

  • How to Vote: An “Official Window Wonderland Contest Entry” sign signifies a storefront’s participation. The community will be able to vote for their favorite displays until New Year’s Day, January 1, 2019. An online link is posted here, accessible by smartphones and desktop computers. Photos of the displays will also be posted there as the Downtown Committee receives them. The winning displays will be announced Tuesday, January 2.
  • Prizes: The business featuring the display with the most votes will receive a grand prize of $500; second place will be awarded $250, and third place will fetch $100. A list of all participants is provided on the following page.

Last year, the Window Wonderland contest drew nearly 1,500 votes. It’s part of the Downtown Committee’s year-round Art in the Windows program, which showcases available storefronts as retail business opportunities by spotlighting the talents of local artists. For more information about the Art in the Windows program, please visit the Downtown Committee’s website.

The Downtown Committee’s seasonal staff members, Dash and Dot, the North Pole Downtown elves, will also help to highlight Downtown as a retail destination. The elves returned to Downtown Syracuse Friday morning and they’ll spend the next month showcasing meaningful gift options. Dash and Dot will visit a total of 30 retail shops, restaurants, hotels and cultural institutions, spreading holiday cheer, and raising awareness about the unique gifts, activities, food and beverages that make Downtown standout as a holiday (and retail!) destination.  Each day, the elves will visit a new place, and post pictures of their adventures across the Downtown Committee’s social media platforms. Followers will be encouraged to guess the business locations of the elves by sending their “guesses” to mail@downtownsyracuse.com. Each correct guess will be entered into a weekly drawing to win gift cards to Downtown businesses. This is the fourth year of the promotion. Last year, the contest drew more than 300 entries! Follow the adventures of Dash and Dot by following the Downtown Committee on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

“Downtown Syracuse is a favorite place for holiday shopping and a centerpiece of many family traditions,” said Merike Treier, executive director of the Downtown Committee. “We hope that the debut of the Downtown Star,  displays created as part of the third annual Window Wonderland Contest, and of course, the elf visits, help stir new appreciation for Downtown’s charms, and perhaps introduce Downtown Syracuse to folks that may not be as familiar with its timeless character. We want to create lasting memories in Downtown Syracuse this holiday season.”

All three promotions are components of the Downtown Committee’s overall holiday retail campaign. Special holiday electronic newsletters – to be sent out every Thursday afternoon through the end of December – will highlight specials at Downtown businesses and all of the exciting holiday activities happening throughout Downtown Syracuse. The community is encouraged to subscribe to the electronic newsletter by emailing mail@downtownsyracuse.com.
