Rock & Roll Rebels with Come Out CNY

A Night of Music, Art, & Rock & Roll

The exhibition America 250: Rebels, Radicals, and Revolutionaries, seeks to summarize the American story: stories of innovation, stories that were systemically erased, and stories of the fight for equality.

Few genres mirror these themes like Rock & Roll music. With deep roots in African American musical traditions, Rock & Roll, started in the 1950s, merged country, blues, and gospel music. Rock blossomed across communities and racial divides, spawning sub-genres and movements. The artists that pioneered these revolutions through art, fashion, and politics are still beacons in the ongoing struggle for liberation.

At this one-night-only event, we want to take you on a musical journey, listening to great American Rock & Roll music and how it’s evolved since the 1950s. Dress like your favorite Rebels: Grace Jones, Prince, Janis Joplin, David Bowie, Little Richard, or your favorite rock star. Check out our mood board for inspiration!

Expect a Night of:

Powdered Graphite and Paint Brush Workshop

Have you ever tried painting with dry media? How about drawing with paint brushes?

In this hands-on workshop, participants will be introduced to the unique qualities and techniques of working with powdered graphite. Learn to develop a range of tones, create soft gradients, and build form from observation, while experimenting with both traditional and unconventional methods of drawing. Working additively with a variety of paint brushes, participants will be encouraged to embrace the movement and versatility of graphite powder, layered alongside the more distinct mark-making of graphite pencils.

Whether you’re a beginner, or an experienced artist looking to experiment with a new medium, this workshop is an invitation to approach the process of drawing from a fresh perspective. This class is taught by fine artist Brittany Cartie @brittanyc.art.ie.

Yoichi Okimoto: Photographer in Service of Democracy @ Art in the Atrium

Before the White House, there was Central New York...

Long before Yoichi Okamoto entered the Oval Office with a camera, he was finding his way in Central New York. A Colgate Alumni, he refined his trade in the ballrooms of the Hotel Syracuse and at the Syracuse Post Standard. When the Army turned him away, people here stood up for him. His extraordinary career did not just pass through this region. It began here. Click here to learn more.

Realities Within

Realities Within presents four enduring genres of artmaking to explore how artists shape, frame, and inhabit the world. Whether a landscape, cityscape, still life, or representation of the human body, these works show how each artist’s reality is impacted by their lived experience. Separated by genre and installed “salon-style”—a term inspired by the eighteenth and nineteenth century Paris Salons, where paintings were hung from floor to ceiling, covering every inch of wall space—the dense arrangement invites close looking and visual comparison, encouraging viewers to find connections across time, style, and subject matter.

The landscape section explores artists’ responses to the natural world, from expansive vistas to intimate views. In contrast, the cityscape section examines the built environment, capturing rhythms of urban life and the evolving character of towns and cities across America. The still life section turns inward, focusing on interior spaces and objects arranged and captured with deliberation. The section with representations of the body centers on the human presence, revealing varied approaches to capturing likeness, identity, and expression.

Featuring old favorites alongside new acquisitions, Realities Within offers a dynamic survey of artistic observation, highlighting how artists have continually returned to these genres to interpret the visible world.

Sincerely, Beato

We remember Beatrice Wood, who signed her pithy correspondence as “Beato,” for her cutting wit, outrageous stories, lustrous ceramics, and complex relationship with artist Marcel Duchamp, a leader of the Dada movement. Determined to resist the life her wealthy parents envisioned for her, Wood became a defining figure of New York City’s Dada scene, embracing the art movement that reveled in absurdity, nonsense, and humor.

Wood first took drawing courses as a teenager at the Académie Julien in Paris and Duchamp encouraged her to make drawing a priority even as her focus shifted to ceramics. Over the course of her career, Wood’s drawings became increasingly personal and autobiographical, often depicting the events and individuals that populated her life.

Sincerely, Beato features self-portraits, sketches, and illustrations that Wood made primarily in the latter half of her life, after she settled in Ojai, California. They function as a pictorial diary, revealing the inner worries, emotions, and desires of the “Mama of Dada.”

Julia Kunin: Electric Dream Machines

With their lustrous surfaces and evocative shapes, the ceramic works of Brooklyn-based artist Julia Kunin aim for maximum sensory overload. Kunin forges disparate influences like Art Deco, Surrealism, and queer abstraction into shimmering ceramic sculptures. For Kunin, discovery and free association reign supreme. Kunin’s mental process echoes her physical process, ping-ponging from one concept to the next. An allusion to a surrealist artist might lead to a rabbit hole about geopolitics or queer identity. Although her stream of consciousness can seem like a firehose, Kunin follows her trail of breadcrumbs with rigorous research—she has even learned entire languages to facilitate her work.
About the Artist: Julia Kunin lives and works in Brooklyn, New York and Pecs, Hungary where she conducts research and develops new work. She received her BA from Wellesley College in Massachusetts and an MFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. She has exhibited extensively in Europe as well as the United States. Kunin was a Fulbright Scholar to Hungary in 2013. She is the recipient of a 2010 Trust for Mutual Understanding Grant to Hungary. In 2008 she received the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant and had a residency at Art Omi. In 2007 she received the John Michael Kohler Arts/Industry Artist Residency. Fellowships have included: MacDowell Colony, New Hampshire; Yaddo, Saratoga Springs, New York; Vermont Studio Center, Vermont; Core Program at the Glassell School of Art, Houston, Texas; and Skowhegan Residency, Maine. Her work has been featured in ARTnews, House and Garden, the Brooklyn Rail, and in Harmony Hammond’s book Lesbian Art in America (Rizzoli, 2000). Kunin’s work has been included in exhibitions at the Museum of Arts and Design, New York; Museum of Applied Art and Design, Frankfurt, Germany; Sculpture Center, New York; and Brattleboro Museum, Vermont. Her work is part of the permanent collection at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; German Leather Museum, Offenbach, Germany; the Margulies Collection, Miami, Florida; and the Museum of Art and Design, New York.

New Works in Clay

The Everson has a long history of working with important contemporary artists. Over the last 58 years, the Everson has produced solo exhibitions for Yoko Ono, Morris Louis, Joan Mitchell, Bill Viola, William Wegman, Carrie Mae Weems, and a host of artists who loom large on the world stage. No exhibition in the Everson’s history can compare to New Works in Clay by Contemporary Painters and Sculptors, a 1976 exhibition that involved bringing well-known painters and sculptors to Syracuse to produce a body of work in ceramics. The project was the brainchild of Margie Hughto, who served as both a professor at Syracuse University and as a curator at the Everson.

The Museum and the University shared a generous grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to transform an old can factory into a working ceramics studio. Beginning in 1975, Hughto hosted artists like Helen Frankenthaler, Larry Poons, Anthony Caro, and Billy Al Bengston at the studio. Each artist was given a team of assistants, as well as access to technical advice from veteran ceramic artists. This flurry of activity resulted in the landmark 1976 exhibition New Works in Clay by Contemporary Painters and Sculptors.

For the first time in 50 years, the Everson will bring together ceramic works by the original 11 participants, as well as works by artists like Kenneth Noland and Mary Frank who participated in subsequent projects in 1978 and 1981. Five decades later, it is not unusual for clay to be a part of an artist’s repertoire. New Works in Clay explores how the Everson broke down barriers between art and craft and set the stage for the current ceramic renaissance in the art world.

Hell's Kitchen

Contains some strong language and moments with mature themes.
Welcome to HELL’S KITCHEN, the hit musical from 17-time Grammy® Award winning Alicia Keys—inspired by her life, her music, and her community.
Your journey begins with Ali, a 17-year-old girl full of fire, searching for freedom, passion, and her place in the world. Along the way, you’ll meet the musical mentor who changes her life, her dynamic family, and the neighborhood that helps her grow. Relatable, raw, and refreshingly fun, HELL’S KITCHEN is a celebration of finding yourself, your purpose, and the people who lift you up.
More than watching a performance, this experience pulls you out of your seat and has you buzzing when you leave, wondering who to tell about it first. The music—a mix of Keys’ greatest hits and new songs written exclusively for the show—is brought to life through exhilarating choreography. It’s a soundtrack of rebellion, life, and love that speaks to you no matter where you’re from, where you’ve been, or where you’re going.
Hailed as a New York Times Critic’s Pick that is, “thrilling from beginning to end – a rare must-see!” HELL’S KITCHEN is directed by four-time Tony Award nominee Michael Greif (Rent, Dear Evan Hansen and The Notebook), with choreography by four-time Tony Award nominee Camille A. Brown, a book by Pulitzer Prize finalist Kristoffer Diaz, and the music of Alicia Keys.
Feel the energy of this multi-award-winning musical and experience where dreams begin: HELL’S KITCHEN

THE SOUND OF MUSIC features music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, and book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, suggested by The Trapp Family Singers by Maria Augusta Trapp. The 1965 Oscar®-winning film recently celebrated its 60th anniversary and continues to be one of the most successful movie musicals of all time.

Urinetown

That title is real. And so is the genius behind it.

Set in a drought-ravaged city where private toilets are illegal, this Tony Award–winning musical uses satire and an infectious score to explore power, inequality, and collective responsibility. Urinetown balances broad comedy with sharp social critique and offers an entertaining entry point to big questions about justice and community.
