Spring Progress Breakfast 2024

Syracuse, NY – The theme of the Spring Progress Breakfast, presented in partnership by the Downtown Committee of Syracuse, Inc. and National Grid, focused on Downtown Syracuse as a dining destination and history of the dining scene throughout the years.

First, Jose Avalos, Owner of Margaritas Mexican Cantina and Inka’s, spoke about his newest venture to create a Peruvian-fusion restaurant in Downtown Syracuse. Avalos shared how Peruvian food has become a growing trend and Downtown Syracuse was the ideal place to bring this cuisine.

Next, Cheryl Chaif, Owner of The Hops Spot, Tallman Cocktail Club and The Whiskey Coop, shared her vision behind opening multiple eateries in the heart of Armory Square. Chaif spoke about her current restaurants’ successes and gave the audience a preview of the progress of the highly anticipated opening of The Whiskey Coop in June.

Then, Don Cazentre, Reporter for Syracuse.com, shared the history of the Downtown dining scene over the past 30 years. Cazentre talked about why his readers are interested in Downtown Syracuse dining and highlighted past and current trends of the restaurant industry in our city.

The Progress Breakfast series is known for providing ‘exclusive previews’ of projects and items that the community is buzzing about. Inviting presenters to share their stories behind these exciting initiatives helps build a deeper connection to Downtown Syracuse and provides insight into the growth underway.

“Listening to today’s presenters share the inspiration behind their continued investments in Downtown Syracuse was a centerpiece to today’s event. Learning how our dining scene has grown through the years to represent a diversity of cuisines, highlights that Downtown Syracuse is a true dining destination,” said Merike Treier, Executive Director of the Downtown Committee of Syracuse.

The Downtown Committee is proud to partner with National Grid to present the Progress Breakfast Series. National Grid, is one of the largest investor-owned energy companies in the US, serving more than 20 million people throughout New York and Massachusetts.

“National Grid understands the value of a vibrancy city center, that’s why our commitment to Downtown Syracuse remains strong. We take pride in supporting local businesses and working with partners like the Downtown Committee of Syracuse who create initiatives that support Downtown Syracuse,” said Alberto Bianchetti, CNY Regional Director, Customer and External Affairs for National Grid.

The Progress Breakfast is held twice a year, in the fall and spring seasons. The event receives corporate support from AmeriCU, CXtec, FustCharles and Tompkins, media support from the Central New York Business Journal and community support from This is CNY.  For more information about the Progress Breakfast, please visit DowntownSyracuse.com.
